Lots of vocal birds singing this morning including singing Nuthatch, Mistle Thrush 1, Chaffinch 5, Song Thrush 5, Blue Tit 1, Robin 3, Great Tit 1, Dipper 2, and Wren all singing, other birds in the area were, Pied wagtail 200+, Grey Wagtail 2, Redwing 1, Buzzard 2 worming in the fields, Goldcrest 4, Chiffchaff 1, Moorhen 2, Long tailed tit 4, dipper 2 (including 1 in stream running through field unusual considering river levels are down?), Green woodpecker 1, Great spotted woodpecker 1 (flyover), Coal tit 1.

mynydd margam




walk from golf course to mynydd margam this afternoon, several flocks of crossbills, 6 buzzards, grt spotted woodpecker and a flock of 33 snipe flushed from a muddy track at the edge of the clearfelled area

walk from bryn

early morning walk from bryn to caerau, no sign of the grt. grey shrike around mynydd penhydd ther'es a fair bit of work going on in the clearfelled area, a few parties of crossbill seen with 3 singing males, a flock of 40+ fieldfare landed in the field at the top of garnwen, 2 ravens circling ffoel y dyffryn, a skylark was even attempting to sing in the drizzle and a total of 12 fallow deer were seen during the walk

Llangynwyd - pen y bryn

Llangynwd sewage works - dipper singing and grey wagtail on river, chiffchaff 1, long tailed tit 14, chaffinch 26, great,blue tit, goldcrest 1, sparrowhawk 1, many pied wag on the beds. Pen y bryn 1 iceland gull still in field by chapel, 1 sparrowhawk, 7 crossbill feeding on seed on the road up to llangynwyd ( 5 juv birds, 2 female ).

llangynwyd - margam forest

Anthony williams and myself braved the strong cold easterly winds on top of Y bwlwarcau today.
Birds seen today were, crossbill 39, snipe 1, redwing 40, field fare 5, buzzard 4, mistle thrush 7, great grey shrike 1,bird was quite flighty it was at the far bottom side of the clear fell at first then flew across onto the maesteg side before disappearing again, reed bunting 4, merlin 1 (male), chasing a small flock of starling at top of Y bwlwarcau, cormarant 1 flying over green fields

                                   These two Cormorants flew down river. Also Green woodpecker,
                                    a few Redwings and a singing Dipper.

spent the morning out looking for white winged gulls and was rewarded with an adult med at swansea marina and a 1st-2nd winter iceland gull at aberavon beach around the jackstone pier

Y bwlwarcau.

                                 Badger and I had a search for the Great grey shrike this morning
                                 without success. We did see 6 Golden plover, 2 Common snipe
                                 and a few Fieldfare. One Crossbill heard flying over. A male
                                 Stonechat still present too.

                                         House sparrow nest prospecting.
                                         Spring usher at Darren wood. This moth is out a month early.
                                            This hoverfly - Episyrphus balteatus - landed on my water bottle.

                                           Also 30 Redwing and a Small tortoiseshell butterfly.

Walk around the old st john's colliery (cwmdu) birds of note were sparrowhawk 2, redpoll 5, redwing 80+, reed bunting 6, mistle thrush 7 ( 3 birds singing ), song thrush 1 singing, greenfinch 4 flyover, crossbill 1+4 flyover, raven 1 on mynydd bach summit, and snipe 1 in photo area.

caer- gymraeg garth

















I used to work on this farm a few years ago it's a pity to see it falling apart.I was surprised to find a dipper feeding on this little stream that runs along the old railway track between brookfield and caer gymraeg. Also there was a single redpoll 8 great tits 3 coal tits 1 great spotted woodpecker 6 blue tits and 8 chaffinch feeding on feeders in back garden
