Maesteg Cemetery - cwmdu

Not a lot of bird life around this afternoon 2 juv green woodpecker, 2 buzzard and a couple of house martins, also 3 redpoll over. Here are some of the wild flowers in the area.

Butterfly's of note were ringlet, meadow brown, green vained white, small copper, also golden ringed dragonfly

Kenfig rivermouth area.

                                     Sanderling, around 60 were on the beach.
                                    Six spot burnet
                                    Meadow Grasshopper ( Chorthippus parallelus),
                                    pink form.
                                    Villa modesta
                                   New bridge over the river. A few GBB, Herring and
                                   Black headed gulls and a Sandwich tern also on the beach.
                                   A Mute swan with two cygnets and 3 Grey heron were
                                   on the saltmarsh pools which were still too full for any
                                   waders. Several Sand martin and a Kingfisher were at
                                   the river, two Silver Y moths and plenty of Meadow brown
                                   and Gatekeeper butterflies were seen. Emperor dragonflies,
                                   Black tailed skimmers and Beautiful demoiselles were also
                                   noted.

Brynllywarth moth light,.

                                57 species in all with this Epinotia brunnichana being
                                new for me. Also Dingy shell, Dot moth, Coronet,
                                Elephant hawkmoth, Swallowtail moth, Sandy carpet,
                                Iron prominent and Lesser swallow prominent.

Nightjar


The year was 2008 the date 23rd july exactly 4 years to the day that this young nightjar had left the nest

                                      47 species in total including Dark/Grey dagger
                                       and the first Antler of the season.

Gilfach Margam - Cwm Kenfig


A view of cwm kenfig valley.
A walk down along the forestry track from the clear fells at the top of gilfach margam brings you down to this open area where you can view across and up the cwm kenfig valley. Birds of note were raven 7 in a group, redpoll, linnet, crossbill, chiffchaff, buzzard, redkite, peregrine/hobby? flew over forestry and out of view too quick to id, also on the clear fell on top 1 male goshawk trying to get his talon's into 2 ravens, 1 family of stonechat, meadow pipits feeding young. Butterflies on the wing were ringlets 7, meadow brown 5, green veined white 1.

                                    Reed, Sedge and Cetti's warbler all singing, a Water rail
                                    was heard and the Mute swan pair have one Cygnet.
                                    Oh, and it was SUNNY!

Buzzard 10, raven 4, tree pipit 1, wood pigeon 7, redpoll 1, swift 12, goldfinch 2, pied wagtail 1, meadow pipit 13, crossbill 5, herring gull 1, skylark 5, stonechat 2 male 1 female carrying food, greenfinch 1, green woodpecker 1, red kite 1, sedge warbler 1, also 1 lizzard 2 ringlet 1 silver y moth.

This family of swallows are ready to leave the nest.
