A walk down the llynfi river was quiet, the riverbanks are still like a jungle with japanese knotweed, a chiffchaff was singing in the sewage works but wagtail numbers were low, highlight was a kingfisher on the river.
Maesteg Cemetery area-cwmdu, a lot of birds moving through house martins out numbering swallows, lots of pipits with occasional skylark,very windy.
Top of Llangynwyd, 1 redkite over waun y gilfach, 5 buzzard in ploughed field with a small flock of linnets fluttering around the fields.

scathophaga stercoraria are sexually dimorphic insects with an average lifespan of one to two months
they mainly prey on small insects but can also consume nectar and dung.

Martyn is this the red form of silpha atrata beetle?

Nantyffyllon today.

                                    Slow worm.
                                    Some bird movements this morning, a steady stream of
                                    Swallows, House martins, a few Meadow pipits and a
                                    flock of 9 Goosander flew up the valley. Chiffchaffs and
                                    Goldcrests moving through too.

1 spotted flycatcher amongst the various tits and chiffchff also 3 bullfinch and 1 goshawk

                                     Also 40 Skylark, 40 Meadow pipit, 2 Pied wagtail and
                                     a Lapwing in the ploughed field. 2 Snipe and a pair of
                                     Stock dove over and a mixed flock of Coal tit, goldcrest
                                     and Chiffchaff in the pines.

1 Spotted flycatcher, 1 blackcap, chiffchaff, willow warbler, swallow, house martin, stonechat

Mesembrina meridiana
This is a species of fly sometimes known as noon fly, it is widespread and quite common between late April and October it can be ID by its orange colouration on base of the wings feet and face.

Helophilus pendulus (female)
It's scentific name means dangling sun-lover, it is the commonest of the helophilus species. Like other members of the genus helophilus it has black and yellow longitudinal stripes on the upper surface of it's thorax. The abdomen is patterned with yellow black and grey and for this reason it is sometimes called the footballer.
