Nantyffyllon.

A Hobby was bothering the Swallows at Cwrtymynws farm before drifting up the valley and my first Garden warbler of the year was singing just below the farmhouse.

kenfig today

a visit to kenfig on a damp and drizzly morning, best of the birds were 2 lesser whitethroats, 2 common sands, a single whimbrel, plenty of whitethroats, blackcaps, reed and cetti's singing, a few swallows and martins over the pool were suddenly joined by 50 + more which flew in out of the mist.

Cuckoo's

Whilst out walking up pwll yr lwrch today tony and myself came across two cuckoo's chasing each other before 1 disappeared towards nanty, the other bird came back and landed on a lamppost enabling me to get a couple of record shots, but when the bird flew past us, we noticed a transmitter looking object sticking up from it's rump, i've emailed the bto for more information and have asked them if they think it is a transmitter. As soon as i get more info i will post an update. Also yellow hammer carrying nesting material, song thrush on nest, willow warbler and blackcap in song

Kenfig pool today

                                    A flock of 21 Whimbrel feeding on the east shore
                                    flew off towards Sker.
                                    Common sandpiper
                                   Shoveler pair
                                    Reed warblers were in song, as were Sedge warbler,
                                    Blackcap, Whitethroat and Willow warbler. House
                                    martin, Sand martin and Swallow over the pool.

I had a phone call this morning off Keith Squires to say that he had a male redstart in his garden in mill view amongst the house sparrows a very nice garden tick for him, also sand martin's over river in garth.

a windy morning walk around the top end of the valley, pick of the birds were, 2 tree pipits, one sand martin, only one willow warbler, plenty of chiffy's, great spotted and green woodpeckers, still one male blackcap in my garden this morning

Gower

                                      Mewslade valley
                                      We smelled this wild garlic before we saw it.
                                     Wild garlic or Ramson.
                                     Pennywort
                                    Portland spurge.
                                    Martyn and I saw the Hoopoe briefly before it flew up
                                    and over the main road. 3 Wheatears and a steady
                                    stream of Swallows passed through.

it all started so well with blackcap being a garden tick 4 males in all, then it all fell apart with a frustrating and unsuccessful hunt for the hoopoe at middleton  both sid and martyn saw the bird and even my wife gripping me off with 4 males and 2 female blackcaps in the garden,

Lots of swallow flying low through the valley and 2 small flocks of martins high up. Too high to tell if they were house or sand martins against the grey clouds also first willow warbler singing and 3 chiffchaff, 1 female blackbird nest building

Spring has Sprung

Had a swallow fly past the house at approx. 09:10 today heading south!!

A walk from the sewage works to the Gadlys stream produced; 6/7swallows, 2 chiffies, dipper, grey wagtail, moorhen, treecreeper and some fine examples of otter spraint, also otter track seen.

margam moors and kenfig saltmarsh

Very quiet today cold easterly winds are still spoiling what should be a busy time of the year, 4 chiffchaff ( 2 singing ), 1 wheatear on the moors with 7 snipe there, reed buntings, m pipits, buzzard and skylark. The beach was very quiet also with a couple of oyster catchers and lesser black back gulls, a couple of black headed gulls with full hoods over. The salt marsh had 2 heron, 1 merlin, 2 lapwing, buzzard 30+ snipe with 3 jacks, gave up counting them in the end, 1 teal (m), 1 field fare over and a couple of great spotted woodpeckers
