Black oil beetle

Whilst working in a garden in Corn town Bridgend i came across this Oil beetle in the flower border. Oil beetles in the UK are in drastic decline only 5 oil beetles remain in the UK with 3 already being extinct. All this is down to bad countryside management. Looking at this beetle in detail shows that it has a kink in the antennae bringing me down to 2 species. Black oil beetle (Meloe proscarabaeus) and Violet oil beetle (Meloe violaceus), Black oil beetle have an almost square thorax which has an almost straight lower edge that shows on these photo's also it lacks the depressed area you would expect from Violet oil beetle so i'm pretty confident on ID

Llangynwyd sewage works

A stroll down to the sewage works to see if there are any signs of sand martin or swallows arriving but unfortunately there were no signs yet so i decided to check the lesser celandine in the woods for hoverflies. There was a single tree with sallow on it producing numerous Eristalis species which would come down to rest on the open ground below along with Cheilosia species (albipila and grossa albipila being new to the valley and also i think grossa also). There were a lot of Platycheirus albimanus feeding on the lesser celandine along with a single Episyrphus balteatus followed by my first sighting and new addition to the valley Melangyna lasiophthalma.
